Rotherham Council has launched a consultation asking residents, landowners, developers and community groups to suggest land that could be used for future development across the borough.
The 'Call for Sites' exercise runs for ten weeks, closing on August 28, 2026. It is part of the early stages of preparing a new Local Plan — a planning blueprint that will guide development in the borough into the 2040s.
What the consultation covers
The Council is seeking suggestions for land that could support a range of uses. These include housing, employment and commercial development, retail, leisure and tourism, environmental and green spaces, community facilities and infrastructure, as well as renewable energy, waste and minerals.
People do not need to own land to submit it as a suggestion. Putting forward a site does not mean it will be earmarked for development, deemed suitable for development, or granted planning permission.
All submissions will be assessed alongside other evidence to help inform future decisions about land use across the borough.
Timeline and next steps
The new Local Plan is expected to be finalised in 2029. Additional opportunities for people to share their views will follow, with further consultations scheduled over the coming years.
The Local Plan is required under planning regulations and will set out how future housing, jobs and infrastructure needs could be met.
