Chantry Brewery is in discussions with Rotherham Council about the future of the Alma Tavern on Westgate in the town centre. The brewery, which operates the nearby Cutler's Arms, is exploring how to bring the listed building back into use.

Structural surveys commissioned by Rotherham Council identified serious safety risks in parts of the building. Some sections will need to be demolished to address these concerns, but the work also creates an opportunity for future investment and redevelopment of the site.

Historic façade to be preserved

Mick Warburton, Director at Chantry Brewery, said the brewery is committed to preserving the Alma Tavern's historic frontage and façade, which are part of Rotherham's heritage. "These historic features are what give the building its identity and make it such a recognisable local landmark," Warburton said.

Chantry Brewery previously restored the Cutler's Arms, work for which it received a Rotherham Civic Society award in 2014.

Part of wider town centre plans

The proposed works form part of Rotherham Council's strategic sites project for the Westgate area. Councillor John Williams, Cabinet Member for Transport, Jobs and the Local Economy, said the council is "committed to working closely with Chantry Brewery and other partners to explore the site's future potential."

Williams acknowledged that many people will be disappointed to see part of a historic building demolished, but said surveys showed the Alma Tavern has deteriorated significantly. "Public safety must always come first, and taking action now will help ensure the area remains safe while creating opportunities for future investment and renewal," he said.

What happens next

Subject to planning approval and completion of the necessary surveys, demolition work is scheduled to begin in the winter.
