Rotherham Council has been awarded £222,000 from the Government's new £10 million Good Food Neighbourhoods programme.
The funding is intended to help local families access healthy and affordable food, particularly during the cost-of-living crisis.
What the council plans to do
Cllr Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council, said the money will build on existing local efforts. The council has previously supported volunteers across the borough to distribute surplus food to those in need, made locally sourced produce from Food Works available in more locations, and connected people with services including employment support.
"For too many families, accessing healthy and affordable food isn't always straightforward," Cllr Read said. "This is welcome news that the government is stepping in to help us do more locally."
The council said the funding will help reach more people, support them to eat better and live healthier, teach new skills, and give them greater control over their own lives.
