Rotherham United Women FC has outlined a £9.5 million vision to bring football back to Millmoor and create facilities for women’s football and community sport.

The club’s initial proposals include a 2,000-capacity stadium with a 3G pitch, a centre for girls’ and women’s football, padel courts, fitness facilities and space for other sports.

The club says it has held initial discussions with site owner the Ron Hull Group and representatives of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.

An early-stage vision, not an approved development

No final development or funding agreements are in place. The proposals would need feasibility work, planning permission and other necessary approvals before any scheme could proceed.

Millmoor was home to Rotherham United’s men’s team until 2008. The women’s club says it wants to recognise that history while exploring a new use for the ground, including the possible incorporation of the Derek Dalton Clock.

Co-owner Phil Smith said: “We’ve had constructive initial discussions with the Ron Hull Group and representatives of the Council. There’s a considerable amount of work ahead, but we believe the potential deserves to be explored properly.”

The club hopes the project could support activity in Masbrough and provide facilities for schools, grassroots teams and local families. Those are ambitions rather than confirmed outcomes.

Public consultation from 26 October

A two-week consultation is due to open on Monday 26 October and close on Monday 9 November 2026.

Residents, supporters, schools, sports organisations, charities and businesses will be invited to comment on the proposed facilities and suggest other uses.

Co-owner Scott Thorpe said: “We’re not pretending this is a done deal. There are plenty of hurdles to overcome, but you’ve got to have ambition.”

The club says participation details will be published through its website and social channels. Supplied images of a redeveloped site are illustrative concepts, not final approved plans.
